I actually had a lot of fun with this one...course, I usually have fun with this stuff 
The idea came to me earlier today to redesign Amy's hammer into this super-cool thing that's powered by a Chaos Emerald...then I got to thinking of a retooled backstory for her. Like, let's say Amy was the daughter of a blacksmith in this rural village, and it's attacked by Eggman.
The people of the village are captured for roboticization, including her father, who manages to save her by hiding her away. 
After Eggman leaves, Amy takes her father's hammer and journeys out to save her people. Maybe she manages to find her way on board Eggman's ship and crosses paths with Sonic, who is on the ship to rescue Tails or save some peeps or just troll Eggman or something. 
Maybe they meet Knuckles later. I don't know, just thinking out loud.

it feels like a combo of her boom and regular design and personality; the tough as nails, level-headed but still feisty girl (who keeps her feelings about sonic hidden).
